Mamie Matsuda was born in 1986 in Tokyo, Japan. She recently played the leading role of Cio-cio san in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly in Bury Court Opera. In 2013 she appeared as une pastourelle in Ravel’s L’enfant et les sortilèges conducted by Seiji Ozawa, which recording won Grammy Awards of best opera recording 2016.

She made her debut in 2009 as the Sandman and Dew Fairy in Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel for the Saito Kinen Festival in Japan. In 2010, she won second prize in ‘Das Festival Voitsberg’ competition and third prize in the prestigious 11th OSAKA International Music Competition. In 2011 she performed the first soprano solo in Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy for the Saito Kinen Festival in China with Keiko Mitsuhashi, conductor, and Peter Serkin, pianist.

Since 2009, she has performed frequently in the Seiji Ozawa Opera Project and Saito Kinen Festival, with roles including La Cugina in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly and the Barbarina in Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro.

She is prizewinner of numerous song and composition competitions and has made many concert, oratorio and opera appearances in Vienna and Japan at distinguished venues including the Musikverein and Suntry Hall.

Mamie studied voice with Claudia Visca, art song and oratorio with Gabriele Fontana, and stage performance with Paul Esterhazy at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, graduating with honours. She currently studies with Nelly Miricioiu.
